ima not greek so… this is as authentic as i could get to making gyro. i marinated the steaks with several seasonings, although some of the spices and herbs i needed were missing. i used: garlic and onion powder, paprika, pepper, cumin, salt and parsley flakes. i also squeezed half the juice of a lemon onto the meat and then drizzled olive oil. i marinated the steaks overnight.
teaspoon garlic powder
teaspoon parsley flakes
two teaspoons onion powder
two teaspoons paprika
i made some tzatziki sauce. everyone seems to make this sauce differently. i make mine using: plain yogurt, sour cream, english cucumber (usually diced but someone else’s hands decided to grate them instead, grr), dill, salt, and pepper. delicious.
half cup yogurt
half cup sour cream
half of cucumber
palm full of dill
half teaspoon pepper
for the zucchini fries i just used store-bought plain and seasoned breadcrumbs. sliced the zucchini, soaked them in half and half, threw them in the breadcrumb mix and fried them up. i love these fries, they’re so good.
half cup of plain breadcrumbs
half cup of seasoned breadcrumbs
(you can use egg wash if you want)
i used whatever veggies i had around for the gyros: lettuce, tomato, red onion, and olives. i do prefer kalamatas but i didn’t have any, canned olives are just fine too. i could’ve made pita bread but i opted out. i gotta take shortcuts sometimes. lastly, some feta cheese, and orzo on the side.
this gyro sammich was really good, i must say, despite lacking some spices and herbs.
